Kirby Kemper(center), vice president for research, signs an agreement with administrators at the Hahn-Meitner Institute (HMI) in Berlin on March 29 that authorizes construction of an $8.7 million hybrid magnet for the institute's research into superconductivity and other materials science-related work. Last year, the Berlin institute approached the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State to design and build the magnet that, when completed in five years, is expected to reach a magnetic strength of up to 30 Tesla, more than a half million times the strength of Earth's magnetic field and double the strength of HMI's current magnet. The contract is between HMI and FSU's newly formed Magnet Research and Development Inc., an organization responsible for overseeing the magnet's construction at the mag lab. -F.S.
